Cadets take part in practical projects which counts towards their classification badges with 485 squadron:

Currently, we have a team constructing a very impressive flight simulator (including multi-screen display, full control-set and a full-size cockpit – pictures to follow) under the supervision of Flight Sergeant Coates.

Pilot Officer Roper has taken charge of the cadets participating in our media projects. These include writing articles for our own, and the wing’s website, and photography (for our own archives and for entry into Wing and Regional media competitions).

Our Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Coates supervises our third project which is the construction of a half scale go-kart. This allows cadets to see the effect of the mechanics inside a vehicle as well as the importance of quality construction and testing.

485 Speeding off on a Great Project

The cadets have been hard at work designing and prototyping a go-kart, in preparation for a larger one which will be used to teach design concepts and propulsion to the cadets.

First of all the cadets researched designs and plans of go-karts, to gain an understanding of go-karts which was used to come up with a few ideas and sketches of what we thought the go-kart would look like. From this we discussed on the best design for the go-kart to be drawn out and adding dimension lines to it.

“Cadet ownership of any project is vital as they will inspire those beneath them to become involved; the cadets have be given significant responsibilities throughout (i.e. the majority of the construction elements) all is supervised by trained staff”, A/FS Coates.

"We measured steel tubing and cut it to size, according to accurate paper-based plans. We then watched a video on welding and then the mainframes was welded together by a member of staff". Quote from Cdt Jenkins.
