Bisley 2009

On the 4th to 12th July 2009 485 (Harborne and Quinton) Sqn entered a team into the Inter Services Cadet Rifle Meeting (ISCRM) at the National Shooting Centre Bisley in Surrey. This is a competition shot on the cadet full-bore target rifle, the L81A2, against the Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) as well as representatives from the Australian and Canadian Cadets. The team consists of four shooters (Cdt Campbell, Cdt Jenkins, Cdt Wilkes and Cdt Yeman), a butt marker (Cdt Hadley) and a coach (CI Andrew Smith). The team entered from 485 Sqn is the first to be entered into this competition from Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing.

The team travelled down to Bisley on Saturday 4th July and from Sunday through to Thursday practiced with Durham/Northumberland Wing on Ash Ranges and also spent a day practicing at the ranges at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. During this time we competed against the 11 teams from Durham/Northumberland Wing for an honorary place in their wing competition, finally finishing in 6th place against teams with far greater experience.

The competition is shot over three days from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th July at 300, 500 and 600 yards. During the meeting the teams shoot for four individual competitions and two team competitions. Each of these scores counts towards the Cadet 100 competition, where the top 100 shooters in the competition receive the Cadet 100 badge to wear on their uniform. Although no one in the team achieved this award, they did have some success in the Patriotic competition at 500 yards where Cdt Jenkins finished 59th out of 457 competitors.

In addition to the competition the cadets also shot for marksmanship badges during the practices. With three of the cadets achieving Regional Marksman and one achieved a Wing Marksman.
